Wrong! It was born in... Kentucky.
While the Sex Pistols did popularize it, the punk look originated with Richard Hell (no, not his real name: Meyers), who preceded the famous band. In fact, Malcolm McLaren, the Sex Pistols manager, openly credited Hell for the inspiration. Hell was a punk rock pioneer; he is probably not that well-known because he spent the 1970s jumping from band to band.
So that's pretty surprising, isn't it? Well, wait until you get to the punchline:
Hell is Jewish.
Alright, to be honest, we're more surprised by the Kentucky part...
