With all the recent kvelling over Andrea Ghez getting the Nobel in Physics, we didn't forget her co-winner: Roger Penrose. Like Ghez, Penrose got the prize for the discovery of black holes, and like Ghez, he is half Jewish. The kvell is through the roof!
Unlike Ghez, Penrose's Jewishness comes from the mother's side, which, to the traditionalist, might make the verdict obvious. Yet here's a quote directly from Penrose:
According to your rules, I guess I could be considered Jewish, even though I do not identify myself as one.
(He was talking to the Jerusalem Post, not to Jew or Not Jew. "YOUR" rules! Well, WE do have rules! What are OUR rules again?)
On one hand, we always try to be inclusive. For example, when a person self-identified as Jewish, we grant the "Jew" verdict, unless there are some exceptional circumstances. But when a person specifically says they are NOT Jewish? "YOUR" rules...
We'll kvelling a little less about that Nobel...
