If you are reading this website, and you are American (as the vast majority of you are), we're willing to be that you are either an immigrant or descendant of immigrants. (Alas, our Native American readership is not exactly through the roof.)

That's what the United States of America always has been: a nation of immigrants. Unfortunately, so many of its current citizens keep forgetting that... and that's putting it mildly.

Which brings us to the Department of Homeland Security, established after 9/11 to combat terrorism and secure borders... but NOT to close off those borders from immigrants, as so many believe. Sigh.

So, it is a big deal that the new head of the Department of Homeland Security is an actual immigrant, Cuban-born Alejandro Mayorkas? We think it is.

Is it a big deal that Mayorkas is so surprisingly Jewish?
