There is a lot of garbage on Netflix nowadays, but once in a while a hidden gem appears. Such was the case with "Unorthodox", the miniseries that turned many heads when it debuted last year. The show dealt with a young Jewish woman, played by Shira Haas, who runs away from her Hasidic marriage.
The show, and Haas herself, received virtually universal acclaim, and won numerous awards. One group that didn't like the show? The Hasids. They didn't exactly like their portrayal, despite the fact that it was based on real-life memoirs of a woman who did in the real life what Haas did on the TV screen (or perhaps because of that...).
Incredibly, "Unorthodox" is not the only Hasid-centric show on Netflix. There is also "Shtisel", about an Israeli ulta-Orthodox family. One of the characters is a young woman about to get married... also played by Shira Haas!
Here's hoping that Haas' recent recognition will allow her to broaden her wings. After all, how many more young Orthodox bride roles are out there? Even with all the garbage on Netflix...
