"Did you ever hear of the Seattle Seven? That was me... and six other guys." — The Dude
Oh, "The Big Lebowski", never failing to disappoint, even on the umpteenth viewing. But who the hell were the Seattle Seven?
No, not an ultimate frisbee team. They were seven members of the Seattle Liberation Front, an anti-Vietnam war movement based in, well, Seattle. It was founded by Michael Lerner, no, not the Michael Lerner who has a key role in another Coen Brothers movie, "Barton Fink". This one was a philosophy professor at Washington University. Those were different times.
The seven were on trial in 1970 for "conspiracy to incite a riot". They eventually got off after it was discovered that undercover FBI agents were the ones creating violence. Those were different times?
One of the seven was Jeff Dowd, who served as an inspiration for the Dude. But he wasn't Jewish, so we'll come back to Lerner, who, after all the brouhaha, became a... rabbi.
