Did you know that George Costanza had two fathers? (No, this was not a conundrum similar to that 80s TV classic(?), "My Two Dads". Somehow, this is now the fourth profile that references "My Two Dads".)
The actor originally cast to play George's father was John Randolph. He appeared in one episode, before a realization hit. We'll let Jason Alexander explain:
John is a Jewish man but he never looked; he had a very sort of WASPy patrician look. He didn't look like me and he didn't look like a Costanza.
So Randolph was replaced with Jerry Stiller, and the meticulous Larry David went as far as re-shooting every scene with Randolph in it for re-airings. So, unless you saw the episode originally run in primetime, you have never seen Randolph as Frank Costanza.
So who was Randolph? A very busy stage, television, and film actor whose career was cut down by the House Un-American Activities Committee. Real name: Emanuel Hirsch Cohen. We guess he changed it to go with that WASPy patrician look...
