One of these days, we're gonna drop it all and move to the Caribbean.
Spend the whole day on the beach, drink rum, buy a boat, take nubile bikini-clad American tourists snorkeling, get high spend nights singing sea shanties...
Fifteen men on a dead man's chest...
One small problem: we wouldn't exactly fit in. Not many Jews live in the Caribbean.
That wasn't always the case. In the 18th and 19th centuries, many European Jews found homes in the islands. For example, two previously-profiled American politicians, Judah Benjamin and David Levy, were born on Saint Croix and Saint Thomas respectively. And Camille Pissarro, the father of impressionism (Monet? please!) was born on Saint Thomas as well.
Now, most of these Jews left the Caribbean: Benjamin and Levy to the US, Pissarro to France. And sure, they found prominence and all, but we just have to ask: why? Why on earth would you ever leave that behind?
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum...
Yes, one of these days...
