Find Norway on the world map. Take a finger and trace north. Then more north. Then some more. You will hit Svalbard, a rather large archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. Average summer temperature? 5 degrees Celsius (41 Fahrenheit). We're better off avoiding Svalbard.
Who does live there? Well, Svalbard's only industry is mining. Not too many Jewish miners...
One sort-of exception: Russian Jew Mikhail Plisetsky, who was in charge of the Soviet concern on Svalbard in the 1930s. His daughter Maya went to school there, before growing up to be one of the world's most renowned ballerinas. Perhaps the constant cold kept her on her toes.
The family didn't last long on Svalbard. They went back to Russia, where Maya's father was arrested and executed.
Svalbard? Perhaps Russia should be on the list of places Jews should avoid...
