British pathologist Anthony Epstein died recently at the age of 102. Jewish, of course, as we always welcome a non-creepy Jewish Epstein to make up for... that one. But let's talk about Anthony!
That's Sir Michael Anthony Epstein, best known for discovering the Epstein-Barr virus, together with the goyishe Yvonne Barr and Bert Achong. (Why is it not the Epstein-Barr-Achong virus?) The EBV's official name is "Human gammaherpesvirus 4". Gamma-herpes? Oh-oh. This can't be good.
The EBV causes mononucleosis. There is no vaccine. Seriously, this is not good.
Which brings us back to Epstein (and, we guess, Barr). Sure, it must be great to have something named after you, but a herpes virus that causes severe illness and has no vaccine? Hard pass.
Maybe that's why Achong stayed out of it...
