In a previous profile, we wrote that football player for Green Bay Packers, lineman Charles "Buckets" Goldenberg, "was probably the only Jew to be nicknamed 'Buckets'". Probably! It's definitely not "Brain", "Genius", or "Professor", monikers we would expect for Jewish athletes.
Goldberg played in the 1930s. We need to fast forward 40 NFL years to get to Steve Furness, who won four Super Bowls with the 1970s Pittsburgh Steelers. His nickname, as bestowed by Hall of Fame teammate Joe Greene...
Buckethead.
One caveat here. Furness actually converted to Judaism for his wife, doing so during his Steelers tenure. Who knows, perhaps he was only called Buckethead during his goyishe days, and "Mean" Joe came up with something more cerebral when he found out his teammate became a Jew?
Professor Buckethead?
