Earlier this year, we found out that Israeli basketball player Deni Avdija was supposed to be one of the hottest basketball prospects. Fantastic, we thought! An Israeli, so he probably is, right? But we decided to wait for the NBA Draft to profile him. (What if he went to the incompetent New York Knicks? So much potential humor can be had at their expense!)
The draft didn't come, of course. When COVID hit, the NBA season was postponed, and the draft with it. And Avdija's potential profile has been gathering dust in our queue.
Well, wait no more! Avdija has been drafted, and, yes, he is Halachically Jewish. His father is a Serbian Muslim basketball player who played in Israel, but his mother is definitely one of us. Rookie or not, this pretty much makes Avdija the best Jew in the NBA by default, but we will find out next soon enough when he joins the...
Washington Wizards. The Knicks passed on Avdija. So much for that potential humor...
